Beyond Trauma Recovery

Services

At Beyond Trauma Recovery Centre, we can help you work through these issues and other mental health challenges you may be facing.  Our therapists also use a combination of modalities, strategies and tools that depend on your needs. We offer a range of services for individuals, children/youth, families, couples and first responders.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is a beautiful way to focus on yourself and get the support you need to improve your emotional well-being and overall health. Each session will focus on identifying your needs, goals, and hopes for your future.

When To Try

Some people seek psychotherapy because they have felt depressed, anxious or angry for a long time. Others may want help for a chronic illness that is interfering with their emotional or physical well-being. Still, others may have short-term problems they need help navigating. They may be going through a divorce, facing an empty nest, feeling overwhelmed by a new job or grieving a family member’s death, for example.

Also, if you are a first responder!

The Modalities

Research shows us that the outcomes of video psychotherapy are as good as in-person psychotherapy. At BTRC, we are pleased to offer both virtual and in-person sessions.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for treating trauma, disturbing life experiences and other mental health struggles.

About EMDR

First being used with victims of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) who had symptoms like flashbacks, phobias and panic attacks, EMDR proved to be an effective therapy tool; it works well with anxiety, depression, over-reactive anger, intrusive thoughts, irritability, worrying, disturbed sleep, and more. EMDR is effective with anything that causes us to say we are “stressed out.”

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy is a safe space to work on communication, building healthy relationships and navigating challenges.

When To Try

Some seek couples therapy to help better understand each other, feel a more profound sense of connection and create more safety and security within the relationship. This can happen when the couple wants and is willing to grow, adapt and change together.

Couples may also want to try therapy when they are experiencing the following:

  • Emotional distance,
  • Lack of intimacy,
  • poor or lack of communication and understanding,
  • ongoing relationship stress,
  • conflict,
  • toxic interactions

One partner or both may find themselves shutting down, lashing out, or becoming vengeful or passive-aggressive during the conflict.

Please note that we don’t engage in couples therapy to address ongoing violence, abuse, or current physical or emotional affairs. Typically, in such situations, we suggest that each partner seek individual therapy before couples therapy.

Our Service Modalities

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

In CBT, you will learn to identify, question and change the thoughts, attitudes and beliefs related to the emotional and behavioural reactions that cause you difficulty.

Learn More Here
CBT can also be an effective tool to help anyone learn how to manage stressful life situations better.
In CBT, you will learn the following:
  • Identify distortions in your thinking

  • See thoughts as ideas about what is going on rather than as facts

  • Consider situations from different viewpoints

  • Problem-solving skills

  • Behavioural strategies (coping skills) to reduce distress and manage mood include breathing retraining, relaxation and visualization exercises.

Although CBT is typically a structured form of therapy, it can be a beneficial tool in combination with other therapies. CBT can help with depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, OCD, bipolar disorders, drug and alcohol use, PTSD, and phobias. While CBT is highly effective in specific ways, it also has some limitations, such as complex trauma.

This 8-week program offers a strength-based psycho-educational component, focusing on what is possible in recovery, in particular, identifying Post Traumatic Benefits. Clients are provided tools to move forward through the lens of intentional living. A group environment of a peer support network improves ongoing connection, encouragement and insight leading to statistically proven results.  Group is capped at 8 participants in a closed format. This program is not for those presently in crisis. Facilitation training is available for qualified therapists.

Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)

EFT for couples is an experiential approach with a focus on adult attachment and bonding.

The ultimate goal is to create and foster a positive, emotional, secure bond between the couple. This helps to create a feeling of safety and connectedness within the relationship.

EFT positively affects mental and physical health as couples regulate each other’s physiology and emotional functioning. EFT has substantial empirical support for its effectiveness (over 30 years of research). This type of therapy is brief and usually implemented in 8-20 sessions.

EFT is also used in individual therapy.

Mindfulness Based Therapies

Mindfulness therapies incorporate practices such as meditation and breathing exercises.

Mindfulness therapies incorporate practices such as meditation and breathing exercises.

Using these tools, therapists teach clients how to break away from negative thought patterns that can cause a downward spiral into a depressed state.

One of the main focuses of mindfulness is teaching individuals to stay focused in the moment. By anchoring and grounding themselves in the present, people often experience a greater sense of calm and a decreased anxiety.

Narrative Therapy

Narrative therapy is a style of therapy that helps people become-and embrace being an expert in their own lives.

Learn More Here

In narrative therapy, we emphasize the stories we develop and carry with us through our lives. As we experience events and interactions, we give meaning to those experiences, and they, in turn, influence how we see ourselves and our world. We carry multiple stories at once, such as those related to our self-esteem, abilities, relationships, and work, for example.

Solution Focused Therapy (SFT)

SFT concentrates on finding quicker resolutions to one’s problems.

Learn More Here

Unlike traditional forms of therapy that take time to analyze problems, pathology and past events, SFT concentrates on finding solutions in the present time and exploring one’s hope for the future to find a quicker resolution to one’s problems. Instead, this method takes the approach that you know what you need to do to improve your life and, with the appropriate coaching and questioning, can find the best solutions.
